John West Announces Candidacy for Senate District 44
Former Moncks Corner mayor and Santee Cooper executive commits to service, not politics.
Moncks Corner, SC – Berkeley County small businessman and attorney John West announced today his candidacy for state Senate district 44. The seat was vacated due to the untimely passing of long-time serving state Senator Bill Mescher.
"Senator Mescher's faithful and able service to our community and state will be missed," West said. "I pledge to continue Senator Mescher's commitment to constituent service."
"I'm running to serve. My loyalty and best efforts will be directed toward being a strong and independent advocate for the good people of Berkeley County" continued West.
West said his decision did not come lightly. "Like every other major decision in my life, my family was a major consideration. Priscilla and I prayed long and hard about this undertaking," West said. "She and the kids have strongly encouraged me to enter this race because they understand how important it is for us all to give back to the community that has been so good to us."
A lifelong resident of Berkeley County, West and his wife Priscilla have been married for 30 years. The two have six children, ages 14 to 24. A graduate of the University of South Carolina and University of South Carolina Law School, West has been a community leader in Berkeley County for nearly three decades.
The former mayor of Moncks Corner said he would begin his campaign with a listening tour of the senate district that serves the Goose Creek, Hanahan, Moncks Corner, and Pinopolis communities.
"I want to keep our corner of South Carolina one of the greatest areas in America to live, work and raise a family. My campaign will be about meeting new friends, renewing old friendships and partnering with Berkeley County citizens to move our county and state forward," West said.
Prior to his service as the mayor of Moncks Corner, West was a city judge and city attorney. Later he served as a member of the executive staff at Santee Cooper as General Counsel. After retiring from Santee Cooper in December of 2004, West returned to private law practice in Moncks Corner where he concentrates on real estate, business and alternative dispute resolution matters.
